In the Lubansky district, the ancient rite of the Rusalie, which appeared in pre-Christian times and symbolizes the end of spring in some Eastern Slavic regions, has been revived. Rusalnaya is called the week after Trinity. According to legend, it is at this time that the mermaids come out of the water and visit the villages, play in the fields and meadows. Their appearance could hinder a good grain harvest and harm the peasants. Therefore, the mermaids had to be appeased and be sure to take them outside the village – then they would not bother people for a year. On Sunday, the last day of the Russian week, games are held with songs, round dances, fried eggs on bonfires.
